Official opening of new De La Rue classrooms in Rwanda
(Kigali, 7th February 2012)
Last week saw the official opening of the Thomas De La Rue Buildings at Isha School in the remote south western district of Rusizi. Thanks to generous donations from De La Rue and in partnership with Rwanda Aid, five new class rooms have been built, providing a clean, safe and
modern learning environment for 870 pupils and 13 teachers, both benefiting and strengthening the local community.
De La Rue has been working in Rwanda for over ten years and already delivers its passport, ID card, driving license and supporting systems, and is currently working on the introduction of an integrated eID card for the Government, the latest phase of the Rwandan National ID project. De La Rue also provides tax stamps and banknotes to Rwanda.
De La Rue announced their support of local charity Rwanda Aid last year, by providing funds to build the new classrooms and also in support of the opening of a street children’s residential village in Cyangugu, which is the first of its kind in the region. Rwanda Aid seeks to bring hope and relief to the most needy and vulnerable in Rwanda by facilitating sustainable community projects in some of the country’s poorest areas.
Kevin Freeguard, Managing Director, De La Rue Solutions commented “ De La Rue continues to strengthen its relationship with Rwanda with a long-term commitment to sustainable and locally driven projects. It was a privilege to be able to attend the official opening, meet some of the parents, staff and pupils and to see the positive impact this funding will have on their lives, providing a lasting footprint within the country”.
David Chaplin, CEO Rwanda Aid commented, “We are absolutely delighted to have worked with De La Rue on this exciting project. The District, staff, parents and children are all extremely grateful for the opportunities this development has made possible.”
