De La Rue, in partnership with the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) of the UAE, has reached a major milestone in its deployment of a Digital Tax Stamp (DTS) solution to track and trace tobacco products. From May 1st 2019, no more cigarettes may be legally imported into the UAE that do not carry both a physical tax stamp and digital code on their packaging.
To date the DTS system, running on the DLR Certify™ system, has received orders for over 100 million tax stamps and digital codes which are being supplied to manufacturers through the systems implemented in their production locations. UAE Customs Authorities have been fully trained and equipped to inspect, accept and approve all shipments which are being tracked from manufacturer through importer and into the supply chain in the UAE.
The solution will also ensure that the UAE complies with the World Health Organisation’s Framework Convention for Tobacco Control, designed to minimise illicit trade in tobacco-based products.
Martin Sutherland, Chief Executive Officer of De La Rue, said:
“We are pleased with the progress we are making on this important project and to have achieved this significant milestone in partnership with the FTA. Our authentication credentials are second to none and this programme demonstrates our capability in delivering physical and digital authentication.”
