THIS IS THE FIRST MAJOR RE-DESIGN OF BARBADOS’ BANKNOTES SINCE THE BANK WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1972 AND THE FIRST SERIES WAS ISSUED IN 1973.
Bridgetown: May 2, 2013
De La Rue, the world’s largest integrated commercial banknote printer has been working closely with the Central Bank of Barbados since it was established, and was delighted to be asked to contribute to the design of the new banknote series which was launched today.
The six denominations - $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 have been retained in this new series. The imaginative design of the new series includes portraits on the front of outstanding Barbadians who have made a significant contribution to society with new reverse images celebrating their achievements.
Governor Dr. Delisle Worrell of the Central Bank of Barbados commented; “We are delighted that the collaborative effort of the Bank and De La Rue has resulted in this new banknote series which the whole country can be proud of.”
Ruth Euling, Sales Director, De La Rue said; “ De La Rue was honoured to have been given the opportunity to be an active participant in the production of such a prestigious and important series of banknotes for Barbados. In the year in which De La Rue celebrates its 200th anniversary, we value highly the long term relationships we have with our customers such as the Central Bank of Barbados. This new banknote family has been delivered as a result of a very close working relationship over many years.”
Since 2001, De La Rue has funded 27 post-graduate scholarships across the Caribbean for students studying for master degrees in Economics or Finance at the University of West Indies (UWI). As part of its 200th anniversary commemorations, De La Rue has pledged to fund one annual scholarship under the Masters Programme at UWI on behalf of the Central Bank of Barbados. De La Rue is also organising an internship programme for the De La Rue scholars who will be given the opportunity to undertake a work placement at De La Rue’s headquarters in the UK. This will provide a valuable insight into an organisation that has in recent years been involved in the design or production of over 150 currencies worldwide.
In addition to designing and producing banknotes for Barbados, De La Rue manufactures the Barbados passports.
