Thursday 15 December 2016 - today the National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia (NBRM) is issuing into circulation 2 new banknotes printed by De La Rue. In a world first, one of the new notes has extra long windows in the high level Kinetic StarChrome® security thread.
This year marks 70 years of central banking activities in the Republic of Macedonia and the National Bank has issued 2 new denominations – a 200 and 2000 Denar – to mark the occasion. The new banknotes show traditional motifs and pattern work with a ceremonial bridal costume portrayed on the higher value 2000 Denar.
Layered counterfeit protection is offered across both the new values. The lower denomination 200 Denar has a colour changing green/red StarChrome® security thread as well as a gold iridescent stripe and Gemini™ ultra violet feature. The higher value 2000 Denar has a Kinetic StarChrome security thread. As only the second country in the world with this thread (following the Seychelles issued earlier this month), this note has a further evolution of the security thread as it appears in extra long windows in the note. This allows more of the holographic and colour changing elements of the security thread to be seen on the surface of the banknote, making it easier for the public to recognise and authenticate genuine banknotes. SPARK® Live Truspin also appears on the front of the note.
Commenting on the launch, Ms Sonja Kanevce, Head of Banknotes Department, said: “We are delighted to be marking our 70 years with the issue of these 2 new banknotes which will help the people of Macedonia with their everyday cash transactions. We are grateful to De La Rue for their help with this project.”
De La Rue’s Ruth Euling, Global Account Director, commented “The issue of the first banknotes with the extra long windows is an exciting development for us and we are delighted to see this innovation in the new Macedonian banknotes.”
