Eastern Caribbean Central Bank issue new $50 polymer banknote into circulation, the first of their new family designed and printed by De La Rue

The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) has issued into circulation the $50 polymer banknote, the first of the new family designed and printed by De La Rue.

All of the new series have been produced on De La Rue’s Safeguard® polymer with the other denominations being issued over the coming months. The $100, $20 and $10 are due for release August – September 2019, with the $5 dollar note at the same time next year.

The design of the new series will be in a vertical orientation instead of the traditional horizontal orientation of paper banknotes. The $50 features a new image of the late Hon. Sir K Dwight Venner, previous Governor of the Central Bank. The $50 also has a holographic foil strip over the clear window to aid public recognition and includes a number of machine detectable security features to ensure authenticity.

The ECCB Monetary Council decided to change the material on which the EC banknotes are printed because polymer banknotes are inherently more durable, providing central banks with a quantifiable increase in the lifetime of a banknote; non-absorbent and therefore cleaner; and provide added security through the adapted design techniques and security features available.

All the banknotes in the new series include a unique tactile emboss feature to help the blind and visually impaired identify each note.

Governor Antoine of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank commented:

“It is wonderful to begin issuing our new family of banknotes with this $50 note. I wish now to acknowledge the contribution of De La Rue with whom the ECCB has a long-term service agreement.  Leveraging its global experience with polymer, De La Rue has been invaluable throughout this process.”

De La Rue’s Global Sales Director Ruth Euling said:

“We are delighted to have been able to design and produce all of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank’s new banknote family, beginning with the launch of the striking $50 note. De La Rue has produced currency for the Eastern Caribbean for over 50 years and we are proud to continue this relationship and additionally provide support for the public education activities.”
