AS PART OF HIS TOUR OF NORTHERN ENGLAND, MARK SIMMONDS, THE UK FOREIGN OFFICE'S MINISTER FOR AFRICA VISITED DE LA RUE'S SECURE PRINT MANUFACTURING SITE IN GATESHEAD, AN EXAMPLE OF A SUCCESSFUL BRITISH MANUFACTURING COMPANY EXPORTING ACROSS THE WORLD
Gateshead:
The De La Rue facility in Gateshead employs over 450 personnel and manufactures banknotes incorporating multiple levels of sophisticated security features and other security documents for governments and central banks across the world. This facility was identified by the minister as typical of the type of the British business the government is keen to support to capitalise on the opportunities that exist across sub-Saharan Africa.
Mark Simmonds, Minister for Africa commented; ‘It is only when you visit a facility such as this that you appreciate the complexity associated with printing banknotes and other security documentation that, to a certain extent, we take for granted. Having met a number of the highly skilled De La Rue workforce I can understand why the company is the world’s leading commercial banknote printer exporting across the world, including Africa.”
Paul Wilson, De La Rue’s Director of Government Relations who accompanied the minister on his visit said; ‘We are delighted that Mark Simmonds was able to visit our facility here in Gateshead today. Exports are an essential part of De La Rue’s business and in recent years De La Rue has been involved in the production of over 150 national currencies, and passports or identity systems for over 65 countries.”
