Glasgow, Monday 23 March 2015: Clydesdale Bank is today issuing a commemorative £5 banknote on Safeguard®, De La Rue’s polymer substrate. The note commemorates the nomination of Scotland’s Forth Bridge for inclusion in UNESCO’s World Heritage List and the 125th anniversary of the opening of the bridge.
The new banknote is a fitting addition to Clydesdale Bank’s award-winning World Heritage note series which showcases the best of Scotland – its people and heritage. It features images of Sir William Arrol, one of Scotland’s most celebrated engineers, whose company constructed the Forth Bridge in the 1880s and Tower Bridge in London. The note also features the Forth Bridge’s iconic structure in the clear window. This 2.5km cantilevered railway bridge crosses the Firth of Forth in eastern Scotland and took 8 years to complete, finally opening in 1890.
A map of Scotland is shown in a colour shifting ink – SPARK® Orbital™ - centring on the location of the bridge. This ink is printed over the window, optimising the clear properties of Safeguard® and making the map visible from both sides of the note.
Speaking about the note, Debbie Crosbie, Acting CEO of Clydesdale Bank, said “Clydesdale Bank is very proud to commemorate the Forth Bridge on our new £5 note. The bridge’s construction certainly lends itself to the intricate processes of banknote printing, combining security, durability and an aesthetically striking design. We are very proud of the note and appreciate De La Rue’s help in realising this ground-breaking new banknote”.
De La Rue Currency’s Sales Director Ruth Euling said “We are delighted to have been involved in this exciting project, extending Clydesdale Bank’s range of award-winning notes. This is our 7th customer to issue a Safeguard note and we look forward to further issues over the forthcoming months”.
