Central Bank of the UAE launches 500 Dirham on polymer

Coinciding with the UAE’s 52nd National Day and COP28, the new 500 dirham launched on the 30th November and is the latest banknote of the UAE to be printed on polymer substrate.

The latest AED 500 banknote showcases the UAE's commitment to sustainable development, featuring prominent cultural and touristic landmarks. On the front, it displays the striking Terra Sustainability Pavilion in Expo City Dubai, symbolizing innovation. The back side presents the Museum of the Future in Dubai, a testament to the blend of historical heritage and futuristic engineering.

The new note was printed in the UAE by Oumolat Security Printing LLC and uses harmonious blue shades and blue fluorescence, mirroring the currently circulating paper design, for ease of recognition.

In line with its sustainability initiatives, the Central Bank of the UAE chose to introduce the AED500 on polymer substrate. Polymer banknotes have greater durability and recyclability than cotton paper banknotes, lasting on average two and half times longer in circulation and being totally recyclable at the end of their life. Polymer also offers greater financial inclusivity, with a tactile emboss feature allowing visually impaired users to identify the banknote.

 On this occasion, H.E. Khaled Mohamed Balama, Governor of the CBUAE, said: "This issuance of the new AED 500 banknote reflects the vision of the wise leadership for a sustainable future and embodies the distinguished record of achievements and development aspirations of the UAE in various fields.
