We actively contribute to our local community to help ensure a better future. Here are a few examples showing how we get involved and where we support the UN Global Compact and their Sustainable Development Goals:
De La Rue has been committed to innovation and sustainability for years. For this reason, the company has partnered with the Energy and Water Agency through the Energy Efficiency Partner Initiative within its facilities in Malta.
De La Rue has embarked on a number of initiatives to increase its overall energy efficiency in its Malta plant. Among other initiatives, the company has carried out an extensive exercise whereby existing lighting was replaced with more energy efficient lighting solutions. Through this exercise, De La Rue has reduced its annual energy consumption by 630MWh. This is equal to the consumption of around 140 households. The company has also introduced cool roofs which has resulted in lower indoor temperature by as much as 2°C and this reduced the cooling demand for the building. The chilling system has also been upgraded to be more energy efficient.
The company aims to further its improvements in energy efficiency with the aim of enhancing competitiveness and ensuring the least impact on the environment.

The Refugee Center was badly hit with COVID-19 having a number of migrants infected who share bathrooms and kitchen facilities. After a long period of quarantine they can now go out from the open center and continue with their day to day lives yet they lack protective equipment. At present visors are the most needed commodity in Hal Far Migrant Center in order for asylum seekers to protect themselves and stay safe within the center and still make it to outside meetings and appointments which they may be required to attend to. Therefore the Malta site looked at assisting this population by donating 500 visors to the Jesuit Refugee Service Malta.
To mark World Health Day in April our Malta site ran a series of engagement activities providing ideas related to wellbeing and coronavirus. This included Stay Safe pictures created by employees and their families, a poster campaign focused on 'being kind to your body and mind' and sharing information around mindfulness.
Earlier this month, De La Rue was proud to be part of Malta Business Bureau’s first knowledge sharing Workshop as part of their Business Energy Cluster. Special thanks went to Osward Armani, from De La Rue & Edward Cauchi, from FMcore Ltd for sharing their knowledge about cooling systems with smaller or less specialised companies!
Another successful event for De La Rue Malta. To kick off the summer, our sports & social committee have organised a boat party to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and the magnificent sea we have in Malta. We had some drinks, nibbles, great music and over 70 employees have attended this event which resulted in a great company and atmosphere.
De La Rue Malta has achieved the Bronze medal for the Mental Health First Aiders. We have 10% of our workforce who are all fully trained and accredited following 3 days of Mental Health training. We've also had a Mental Health awareness day to inform and educate our employees and make sure they ask for help when required. Mental Health Matters – Our Employees Matter!
On Easter Saturday team members from the Malta Site got together for a Family Fun-day in aid of Beyond the Moon
Together with their family members, they joined the annual Football tournament, Volley Ball games and a team building activity - Build a Puppet, whereby teams were requested to build a 3 meter tall puppet made of cardboard, tie-rips and sticky tape. Everyone who participated contributed with a donation towards Beyond the Moon. It was a fantastic day enjoyed by all!
The Malta plant's first recognition week for 2019 went great. They started the week by welcoming all employees with tea, coffees and delicious doughnuts, and then held birthday celebrations for the month of April followed by a small get together and “You Talks sessions” with the Plant Manager.
Team briefs were delivered to all employees conducted by the Plant Manager, who gave his views on the FY 18/19 year along with upcoming projects within De La Rue Malta. The plant also held a Security Awareness Day, where there were competitions to raise awareness of Security and prizes were given to the first 3 employees that were competing. The week closed with an awards ceremony whereby 111 employees were recognised and celebrated for a variety of achievements!
The Gift of Organ is the greatest gift of life. The Malta site raised awareness about Organ Donation and it’s importance whereby 83 employees registered with the National Organ Donor Association in Malta to become Organ Donors. The Minister of Health in Malta came on site to thank the employees in person and stressed the importance of individuals to donate their organs after death as one organ donor can save up to eight lives.
At the Malta Site we had a week of events to get our employees thinking about gender equality and raise awareness that every woman has the potential to achieve in roles which are generally male dominated. The theme was #Balanceforbetter - The better the Gender equality, the more diversity and creativity, the better solutions and work ethic.
The importance of having a balanced workforce was promoted during HR Gamba walks on shop floor where #Balanaceforbetter postcards were distributed together with some material created by the Malta National Committee for the Protection of Equality. On one of the days we held a 'Make Your Pledge Competition' in the canteen where we welcomed all our female employees, thanking them for their services and gave them a small gift. The gift was purchased by a female Maltese Artist to further promote female entrepreneurship.
Beyond the Moon is a charitable entity that offers seriously ill children and their families a relaxing, all-in cost free family vacation to a destination that appeals to the children's imagination. The carefree family vacation offered by Beyond the Moon gives them the energy they need to experience some joy in their life and to continue their daily struggle against the disease. Its goal is to continue to make a difference and this can only be achieved with the help of our donations.
Two families were nominated on behalf of De La Rue in 2018.
This year, once again, De La Rue Malta raised €8,000 which is enough to nominate another two families that could benefit from the Beyond the Moon foundation.

An annual Christmas Party was held to end 2018 and thank our team members for their hard work and contributions towards the Company's success.
The event was held in a glamourous venue, where all De La Rue attendees danced the night away.
Employees at Malta site raised €956.26 for the Down Syndrome Association Malta by rocking their odd socks on World Down Syndrome Day.
Work Hard Play Hard! Over 300 employees from De La Rue Malta joined us at Infinity by Hugo's for our Summer Party. Everyone shared good times and enjoyed themselves with great food and drinks, with an awesome DJ playing all night and fire jugglers providing sizzling entertainment.
Celebrating the production of the 50,000,000th passport in Malta. The first ever purpose built ePassport production facility opened it's doors in Malta in 2008 and since then De La Rue saw productivity grow year on year. In order to express our thanks on the achievement on this milestone, we organised a relaxing evening for our staff to thank them for the efforts they put in over the years. Most of our staff have been with De La Rue since its inception in 2008 and have shown dedication and commitment throughout this journey. We look forward to the next 50,000,000!
De La Rue Malta raised more than €8000 towards the Beyond The Moon Foundation - an international group that specialises in caring for and supporting terminally sick children, their family and carers, sending them on a bespoke holiday of a lifetime. With this amount of funding from De La Rue, two worthy families will be taking their amazing trips during the summer of 2018.
The President Fun Run, organised by the Malta Community Chest Fund, was well supported and attended by staff and employees, running and taking part in the event to raise funds for the chosen charities.
Our employees have been pivotal in ensuring the site has continued to meet customer requirements throughout Covid-19. During June we wanted to show our appreciation by celebrating them as our superheroes for an entire week. Activities included ‘superhero’ lunchboxes with personalised messages from the management team, birthday celebrations, employee recognition awards and family financial wellbeing awareness and a quiz! Thank you to all our employees for their part in making De La Rue successful.
We actively contribute to our local community to help and ensure a better future and our employees engage widely in Corporate Social activities in different ways. Covid-19 has hit everyone in the world including our health, social life and financials. With this in mind we have reached out to local NGOs to offer our support.
We contacted Richmond Foundation Malta who gave us a list of their clients who are Differently Abled but housed in their Independent Living houses, who due to COVID-19 have lost their income, and have little to no access to government funding, and are in need of food. So we collected food items from our team members in order to support these families. A number of employees then volunteered to join in a distance delivery of the food collected.
To recognise International Women’s Day we joined up with other major companies in Malta to run a campaign collecting toiletries and items that every woman needs but might not afford, to then be distributed among women's shelters in Malta. International Women's Day is a day to celebrate every woman's dignity.
Particularly in light of increased awareness of domestic abuse in Malta, we wanted to do something inhouse to help our employees feel like part of the solution. The donations will then be distributed among a number of sites. Thanks to everyone for your support.
On 30 November De La Rue Malta was awarded the Energy & Water Sustainability Award 2019 by his Excellency George Vella, President of Malta and Hon. Minister Joe Mizzi. The award was organised by the Energy and Water Agency in conjunction with the Chamber of Engineers as part of the Malta Engineering Excellence Awards.
The winning project was the chilled water network for the wide-web offset printing press for Authentication installed in Malta last year. The Malta Plant team implemented a network of heat exchangers and air/water heat exchangers circulating water from an underground reservoir to provide chilled water to the 14 UV drying positions on the press.
The deployment of this readily available technology avoided the investment and running costs of a new 130kW chiller, displaying our positive commitment towards sustainable manufacturing.
The project delivered the following sustainable metrics:
1. Elimination of use refrigerants and related greenhouse gas emissions (100%)
2. Reduction in energy requirements and related CO2 emissions (~10T of CO2 p.a.)
3. Use of temperature content of a body of water which was otherwise unutilised
4. Reduction in investment cost (€24k)
5. Reduction in running costs (€10k p.a.)
The project was also presented during a conference titled “Promoting Energy Efficiency in the Industry and Services Sector” organised by the Energy & Water Agency on 3 December, a 6 monthly conference organised by the agency to share best practice on resource efficiency and supported throughout by the members of the ‘Energy Efficiency Partnership Initiative’. De La Rue Malta is already an active member of this initiative and considered as a local leader in this field.
1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in their lifetime, however the impact on family and friends is much greater than that. Due to this, at any point in time, we have a family member or employee going through the struggle within the Malta site and it is important to show support, care and unity. We have been selling Hope Pins throughout October and on 31st October 2019 we concluded this with a celebration of Life and Hope where everyone wore Pink and we had a get together in the Canteen during break times with HR and the SLTs. We distributed flyers around self-checking as well as journals that help our employees implement small changes to lifestyle that will help prevent breast cancer. Employee donations have reached the amazing amount of €1222.73 and counting!
Mental health awareness is something we are committed to at De La Rue Malta. We have in fact been given the bronze certificate by Richmond Foundation as a company that is equipped to help employees who suffer from or are developing mental Illness. We have joined forces with local charities and local suppliers to provide Mental Health Awareness with a difference over the span of a month.
On 10th October 2019 for World Mental Health Day postcards were displayed on the canteen plasma screen explaining how Mental Health impacts everyone. The same posters are also being displayed for the entire month in the canteen. In addition; aromatherapy melts and chocolate were given to employees as modes of stress relief. Then on 21st October 2019 we held a Read to De-stress Day. Research shows that reading for 6 minutes relieves stress more effectively than listening to music or exercise. As such we have joined forces with Inspire, an NGO that supports people with mental and physical disabilities and their families, to have a book sale on site to promote reading in Break times.
During the Easter week, employees were encouraged to donate Easter eggs and other Easter goodies whilst the sports and social members purchased brand new toys be donated. On Easter Saturday, following a Family Fun-day orgainsed by the Malta site, the Sports and Social committee members represented all employees at Malta General Hospital, where toys were distributed to all the children staying the oncology section and in two Orphanages. Over 100 Easter goodies were donated!
In March the Malta Site teamed up with the Malta Down Syndrome Association to raise awareness for World Down Syndrome Day. On the 21st March we had a representative from the Malta Down Syndrome Association that helped us to sell mismatched socks in aid of the association. The representatives joined the HR team and thanked employees for their contribution. Total amount of donations collected was over €510!
The 2nd Oscars Night even was held in November 2019 as part of the site's internal engagement and communications plan.
The attendance this year doubled, and participation increased across all departments. The employees themselves nominated and voted for their fellow colleagues recognising them for their hard work and perseverance. A total of 12 awards were awarded during the night. A fantastic event and a brilliant night was had by all.
Christmas is a time to spend with our family, so we decided to throw a Christmas Party for all the employees' children as well.
It was a very joyful event where Santa joined to celebrate and deliver gifts. Several games were organised, and all kids left with a smile on their face.

One of the nominated families travelled for a week to Disneyland in July. We were also lucky enough to host the family to our factory during recognition week where they were gracious enough to share their experience. Quote from the father "Out of the 47 times that my child had to board a plane, this was the only time he did not board to undergo treatment."
The brave youngster was given a small gift on during his visit as a token for his bravery and fight against cancer!
As part of our corporate social responsibility activities, during our Employee Recognition Week held in August, we focused on creating more awareness on how we can reduce our energy consumption bot at work and at home. Various talks and discounts where given to our employees by our suppliers which contributed to increased energy saving awareness. We also introduced a stationary bike at the canteen which can be used by employees to charge their mobile phones by paddling away and thus reduce electricity consumption while keeping fit.
The Association for Abandoned Animals; known as AAA, houses 95 dogs, all abandoned and mostly come from the streets. AAA's mission is to shelter these poor animals, treat them for any injuries or illness that they may have, and then place them for adoption. They rely on donations to continue their work therefore De La Rue's commitment in helping the association was sincerely appreciated. A big thank you goes to our team members for their generous charitable donations, with a total sum of €3000!
As part of our internal engagement and communications plan, we recently held a glamourous Oscars Night with awards given to members of staff to recognise hard work and perseverance - with a large amount of fun and plenty of props put to good use on the night! The employees themselves nominated and voted for the winners – a fantastic event and a brilliant night was had by all!
Held in collaboration with The Malta Community Chest Fund and The Malta Special Olympics, De La Rue joined in a whole range of activities including: a 5 A-Side football tournament, Bocce Game, CPR Competition, Bingo for the less sporty individuals and animators and fun activities for children of all ages.
The event was organised for company employees, their families and youths from “Special Olympics Malta Team”. Adding further prestige to the event was the presence of her Excellency Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, President of Malta who also attended the day’s activities and subsequently uploaded photos on her Excellency’s Facebook page!
De La Rue Malta received a shared award and prize for the Land & Sea clean-up activity that took place during the 2017 European Week for Waste reduction. The clean-up was coordinated by #Zibel, a non-profit organisation, and De La Rue Malta sponsored the event.
The award and prize for ‘Best clean up awareness event’ was received at a function hosted by Wasteserv Malta (Sponsors of the EWWR 2017 week in Malta). De La Rue Malta has donated their portion of the prize money to #Zibel to sponsor a future clean-up event and for the development of an on-line educational website. De La Rue Malta will be taking part in a future clean-up event to celebrate the European Week for Waste Reduction 2018.
The 10th Annual President’s Solidarity Fun Run was held on Sunday 4th November and a group of De La Rue Malta employees joined thousands of participants. All proceeds from the event goes towards the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation.
De La Rue Malta run regular Recognition Weeks throughout the year with a fixed schedule for each event run: Monday – Staff were welcomed to work with healthy snacks. Tuesday – Team briefs and business updates. Wednesday – Recognition & Employee motivation including Training and Development sessions, celebrate “Workaversaries” and team achievements. Thursday – Sharing Success Day where we showcase OpEx projects and Friday is usually a corporate social responsibility activity focussing on the Environment, Health and Wellbeing.
